The Saints officially announced the signing of offensive lineman Patrick Omameh on Monday, and the corresponding move was to waive wide receiver Cameron Meredith. The former Jags left Guard Omameh worked out Sunday for the Saints.
Saints coach Sean Payton said on Monday that they’d previously worked Omameh out before, but he wasn’t ready to sign at that time.
“We were aware of where he was at and we liked the athlete,” Payton said of Omameh. He added that Omameh having played for Marrone — a former Saints offensive coordinator under Payton from 2006-08 — didn’t influence the decision to bring him aboard, but Payton said “certainly (Omameh) was a player that was on the radar for us.”
Omameh has started in 56 games, appearing in 67, during his six-year career. In 2018, he played for both the Doug Marrone-led Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Giants.
Terms of Omameh’s deal were not immediately available.
